How to calculate mulch

Multiply length × width for square footage, multiply by depth (converted from inches to feet) for cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 3-inch layer is standard for mulch; use 4–6 inches for new garden beds.

FAQ

How many bags are in a cubic yard?
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it equals about 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags. Buying in bulk by the yard is usually cheaper above ~10 bags.
How deep should mulch be?
2–3 inches for established beds (enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture), 3–4 inches for new beds. Deeper than 4 inches can suffocate roots.
